Neck pain can stem from various causes, with two of the most common being injuries sustained either in sports or accidents and poor posture.
Traumatic injuries, such as those from accidents or sudden impacts, can strain or damage the muscles, ligaments, and nerves in the neck.
Poor posture, often due to prolonged sitting, looking down at devices, or incorrect ergonomics at work, places excessive stress on the neck and shoulders, leading to discomfort over time.
Individuals with neck pain may also experience additional symptoms, including weakness, loss of mobility, and difficulty performing everyday tasks, such as reaching or grasping objects. In some cases, the pain may radiate down the arm, indicating nerve involvement or irritation.
Recognizing these causes and associated symptoms is essential for addressing neck pain effectively. Early intervention, improved posture, and targeted treatment can help alleviate pain, restore mobility, and prevent further complications.
What are the symptoms of Neck Pain?
Neck pain can present itself in various ways, however many describe the pain as:
- A persistent ache
- A stabbing or burning pain
- A shooting pain that travels from their neck to their shoulders or arms
- Headache
- Stiffness in your neck, shoulders and upper back
- Being unable to turn your neck or tilt your head
- Numbness or tingling feeling in your shoulder or arms
At Fray & Stafford Physical Therapy, neck pain is one of the most common conditions we treat – which is unsurprising considering up to 20% of adults are affected by the condition. Your chances of developing it increase with age but that doesn’t mean you should be resigned to a future of pain and discomfort.
Many patients who come to us with neck pain have tried a variety of remedies in the past. They’ve taken over-the-counter medications, tried resting, used ice or heat, and even purchased products online in an attempt to manage their pain. While these methods may provide temporary relief, they often just mask the pain, with symptoms returning to their baseline after a short time.

What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Neck Pain?
Our approach to treating neck pain focuses on addressing the root causes rather than just managing the symptoms. We use techniques like soft tissue mobilization to relieve tension, improve circulation, and enhance overall function in the neck and surrounding areas. This hands-on method helps release tight muscles and alleviate discomfort while promoting better movement patterns.
Strength training and postural interventions are integral parts of our treatment. By targeting the muscles that support the neck and upper body, we help patients achieve a more upright and balanced posture. Strengthening these muscles reduces strain on the neck, making daily activities more comfortable and less taxing. Postural improvements also help prevent recurring pain by correcting underlying imbalances that often lead to discomfort.
In addition to these strategies, we incorporate methods to enhance the individual’s ability to walk. While the connection between walking and neck pain might not be immediately obvious, it is significant. Poor posture during walking, such as forward head posture or rounded shoulders, can exacerbate neck pain. By focusing on gait correction and improving mobility during walking, we help alleviate strain on the neck and reduce the risk of further issues.
We also integrate education and personalized care into every treatment plan. Patients learn about the factors contributing to their neck pain, as well as techniques they can use to maintain progress outside of therapy sessions. This may include ergonomic adjustments for workspaces, guidance on safe movement patterns, and exercises to practice at home.
By combining these targeted techniques with patient education, we aim to provide long-term relief, restore mobility, and empower individuals to take control of their health. Our goal is to help patients return to their daily activities with confidence, ease, and a renewed sense of well-being, free from the limitations of neck pain.
